Why do I need an air purifier in my baby’s room?
Doctors advise to start taking care of your child’s health before he is born, and when he is already born, you need to create the most comfortable conditions for his life, taking into account all factors. The conditions in which your child will spend the first years of his life will determine what reserve of health will remain with him throughout his life. And if from the first days he will breathe in exhaust fumes, flying out of the window from the road, or in tobacco smoke from the staircase, or dust, which is in any apartment, his small, immature body will be poisoned from the first days, losing its strength, instead of gaining them for an active healthy life, and in the future to spend energy on studies, active discoveries, the successful achievement of new goals, but not for treatment of diseases which appeared in childhood.
It is no secret that in the last decade not more than 2% of absolutely healthy children are born, so is it really worth worsening the already fragile health of your child, allowing him to breathe the polluted city air, creating in his lungs piles of dust and toxic chemicals, every day weakening health?
To protect your baby, you need a small investment, enough to buy an air purifier for the nursery. Most rooms in modern apartments have an area of 14-20 square meters, so you can get by with a very small amount, buying an air purifier, designed for a small room.
What features should have an air purifier for children’s rooms?
The main purpose of buying an air purifier for a child’s room – to protect the child from all possible poisonous substances that are detrimental to his health, and therefore the list of contaminants that can cope with this device should be maximal.
The most effective devices with HEPA-filters are those that deal with dust
For chemical substances, exhaust fumes, tobacco smoke and germs the air cleaners with photocatalytic filters
Ionization of the air is necessary to improve attention, reduce fatigue and promote health.
HEPA-filter: you can, of course, buy a cleaner for the nursery without replacement filters – with an electrostatic filter (washable) or an air washer, but the degree of purification in this case will be markedly reduced. The smallest dust, which is the most dangerous because it easily penetrates into the lungs and is deposited there permanently, is caught by electrostatic dust collectors or air washers with 85-91% efficiency, and HEPA filters with 91-99.9% efficiency.
Photocatalytic filter: in addition to mechanical pollutants (hair, dust, soot, etc.) the air contains chemical pollutants that are very harmful to the health of children: formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals emitted by furniture, decorating materials and plastics; car exhaust from the road, hazardous industrial emissions through the window; tobacco smoke; viruses and bacteria causing various diseases; mold and dust mites, which provoke allergic episodes. All these contaminants are most effectively dealt with by photocatalytic filters which purify the air on a molecular level through chemical reactions: decomposing such contaminants into harmless components and neutralizing microbes with the help of oxidants formed on the catalyst surface under the action of an ultraviolet lamp.
To eliminate germs, bacteria, viruses, mold, and dust mite, a baby air purifier should have at least an ultraviolet lamp, which is effective against organic pollutants but powerless against chemical ones.
Ionization of the air: Being out in the fresh air in the countryside, children are awake and cheerful. When they come home, they get tired quickly, get fretful, complain of headaches and often get sick. This change occurs because of the lack of negative ions, of which there are many in the country air, where they are formed by the sun, rain and lightning. In a city with a huge amount of concrete walls, asphalt, metal structures, cars, negative ions are attracted to these surfaces, discharged and disappear. The air becomes “dead” – electrically neutral, and children, not getting healthy ions, feel worse, get sick more often.
In any room, the situation is even worse – neither sun nor rain penetrate into our apartments, and can not charge the air. Even if we open a window, the small amount of negative ions that are in the city air is quickly destroyed, they are discharged, attracted to the working electrical appliances, walls, and are instantly absorbed by people who are in the room.
That is why an air purifier for a child’s room should be with a HEPA filter, a photocatalyzer and an ionizer – this is the optimal set of functions necessary for a child purifier to be not just a nice household appliance, but really take care of your kid’s health.
Some people are afraid to buy a device with interchangeable filters, fearing the high cost of replacing them or the lack of consumables for the right model in the future. In fact, these fears are unfounded. Choose for your child a device with inexpensive filters (ask the seller in advance about the cost of consumables for the chosen model). In most cases, you only have to change the HEPA filter once a year, and at an average cost of 2000-3000 rubles, the expense is not expensive at all. We often spend a lot more on medicine for the baby during a week of treatment for a cold. And if the baby was protected from viruses and bacteria, had a strong immune system, he would not have to suffer, lying in bed during the illness, to drink medicine with side effects. All you had to do was turn on the air purifier in the baby’s room regularly.
If you’re worried that the filters for your unit won’t be on sale in a year or two, just buy them in advance, the investment isn’t that big. Although you can buy consumables for most well-known brands without any problems, including those models that are no longer in production.
In addition to all of the above, the cleaner for the child should be as quiet as possible so as not to disturb his sleep and not to tire him during the day. It should have a high air exchange rate so that the air in the room does not have time to stagnate and become polluted, so it is better to choose a child purifier so that the area for which it is designed according to the instructions is slightly larger than the area of the room. Choosing and installing an air purifier in the children’s room, remember that it can protect your child as much as possible if it is on all the time. In addition, it is desirable that the living room, where the child spends a lot of time, also has an air purifier, and in the kitchen at least a small ionizer.
