Whether in the interior, in the refrigerator, or for the purification of water: ozone generators are becoming more and more popular and increasingly offer the solution to odor pollution or problems with bacteria or mold.
What is an ozone generator?
An ozone generator is a device that is used for neutralizing or eliminating odors. It differs significantly from an air purifier in that it is used in the field of indoor air treatment only in case of acute need against strong odors.
Thus, an ozone generator can be called a kind of air purifier, but the terms are not synonymous.
How does an ozone generator work?
An ozone generator produces ozone from ordinary oxygen (O²) by adding another oxygen atom to it, which is only unstably bound to it. This turns the oxygen into active oxygen and there are several ways to get this process started.
Ozone generation with corona discharge
The silent electrical discharge developed by Werner Siemens as early as 1857 is also called corona discharge and describes a process for the production of ozone.
In this process, oxygen is passed through an electric field, which produces ozone. Depending on the voltage level and the amount of gas, more or less ozone is produced. In order to make good use of the gas, a dehumidifier must be installed upstream.
Ozone generation with UV light
Inspired by the natural generation of the ozone layer in the stratosphere surrounding the Earth, another type of ozone generator works with the help of UV radiation from a light source. Since this type of ozonator machine does not produce nitrogen oxides, air can be used and the energy required for drying and extracting oxygen is saved. However, significantly less ozone is produced here in comparison.
What can an ozone generator be used for?
Whether in odor-contaminated rooms or in medicine, air ozonators have many areas of application in which their advantageous properties have been used as a standard for decades in some cases. In households, it is especially useful in kitchens. Imagine that you have burned something, in normal circumstances, you will have to wait for hours for the air to naturally filter out, but with an ozone generator, this process is sped up significantly.
The function of odor neutralization is applicable to various areas. For example, portable ozone generators are often used on boats to combat musty odors below deck. To be on the safe side, it should be noted that an ozone generator should only be used on boats that are moored in port, as the safety risks are the same.
What factors to look for when buying?
If you have decided to buy a home ozone generator, in addition to the significant differences depending on the desired use, there are also some factors that affect the quality and thus the safety and effectiveness of the device, which should therefore be addressed:
- Power in watts;
- Weight;
- Processing;
- Material;
- Size;
Test winners among ozone generators are often equipped with Bluetooth function, which allows users to control or stop the operation of the device without having physical access to it. If this is not the case, the selected ozone generator should at least be equipped with a timer, that is, automatic shutdown after a predetermined time.
